Description

This hearty and visually stunning marble rye bread is perfect for breakfast. With its swirled rye and wheat dough, it’s a flavorful homemade loaf that’s easy to make and ideal for toast or sandwiches.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup rye flour

  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tbsp caraway seeds (optional)


Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, rye flour, sugar, and salt.

  2. In another bowl, activate yeast in warm water for 5 minutes.

  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients, add olive oil, and knead for 7 minutes.

  4. Let dough rise for 30 minutes, covered.

  5. Divide dough in two. Mix cocoa with a little water, knead into one half.

  6. Roll both doughs into rectangles, stack, and roll into a log.

  7. Twist log for marbling and place in a greased loaf pan.

  8. Let rise again for 20 minutes.

  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.

  10. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

You can swap sugar for honey, and olive oil for melted butter or coconut oil. Add extra caraway seeds on top for more flavor.
